Cameroon joins the international community on October 1 to celebrate the 28th International Day for Older Persons in Yaounde under the theme “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions.
The Minister of Social Affairs Pauline Irene Nguene was speaking in an event in Yaounde to celebrate the international day for older persons calling on the Cameroonian community to avoid acts of stigmatization towards elderly people.
Older persons need to be treated as assets in the society owing to their role and relevance in the society.
The event organized in Yaounde also engulfed a mass prayer for peace in Cameroon given the present instability and violent occurrences mostly in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon.
The government seized this opportunity to reassure elderly persons of the measures put in place to ensure that the UN slogan of “leaving no stone behind” becomes a reality in Cameroon.
The international day of older persons was a UN General Assembly decision to establish October 1 every year as a day dedicated to older persons recorded in Resolution 45/106 and this day was first observed on October 1, 1991.
