The Cadet Lions of Cameroon, present Champions of the just ended 2019 U-17 AFCON in Tanzania have been given a triumphant welcome back in Cameroon.
The Champions led by the Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi and the FECAFOOT President, Seidou Mbombo Njoya landed at the Yaounde Nsimalen Airport earlier this Monday 29th April 2019 with the highly contested trophy.
After the airport formalities, the Centre regional Governor, Naseri Paul Bea welcomed the 2019 U-17 AFCON champions with broad smiles.
Delegations of dance groups, football family and musical bands were sent to a frenzy upon the arrival of the team.
The full delegation drove from the airport to their base at the Mansel hotel at the Elig-Edzoa neighbourhood in Yaounde.
The Cadet Lions commune with Yaounde City dwellers
Despite the rainfall, football lovers, school children, city dwellers and well-wishers lined up along the itinerary to cheer the young victors.
Team captain, Fabrice Ndzie and Coach, Thomas Libii brandished the precious medal from a military jeep.
At every popular joint, the city dwellers cheered the team and the delegation.
Many waved the green, red, yellow colours with smiles on their faces.
Business persons, people on the sidewalks, commercial motor bike riders, taxi men and many others joined the frenzy with much ease.
Many a person could have thought the rains will hinder the communion between the players and the city dwellers but rather the scenes were intimate and worth watching.
The team went through major neighbourhoods in Yaounde like Messamendongo,Tropicana, Mvan, Mvog-mbi, Post Centrale, Nlongkak before Mansel Hotel, their den.
The Cadet Lions and their journey to success
Cameroon won the U-17 AFCON tittle after sixteen years, that is 2003 since when the baby lions grabbed their first U-17 trophy.
The team played a total of five matches, won four, drew one and scored a total of four goals and conceded just one.
The journey started off with a group win over Guinea. The boys of Thomas Libii later overpowered Morocco to a 2-1 defeat on day-2.
Their third run was a goalless encounter with the West African team, Senegal.
Cameroon went on to win 4-3 on penalties against Angola at the semi-final stage, despite being down to 10 men.
The Cadet Lions of Cameroon finally defeated Guinea 5-3 on penalties to win the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations tittle.
The team will lead other African qualifiers to the 2019 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in November.
Just to note that, after the victory of the baby lions at the Dar es Salaam National Stadium in Tanzania, President Paul Biya of Cameroon shared his joy with the players and Cameroonians through a tweet.
